Built Through Collaboration鈥&苍产蝉辫;

The project grew out of Mackenzie鈥檚 visit to see Jantzen and Beth鈥檚 collection in California and conversations about鈥痶eaching鈥痑n exhibition鈥痵eminar centered on direct engagement with collectors. Recognizing the educational potential, Mackenzie invited the collectors to collaborate with his students.鈥&苍产蝉辫;

鈥淭he collection was so rich in possibilities, and the opportunity to work directly with collectors was invaluable,鈥 Mackenzie said. 鈥淚t allowed students to explore not just the鈥痑rtworks鈥痶hemselves, but the social and emotional networks that give those works meaning. The students truly took ownership of this project from developing the conceptual framework to making difficult curatorial decisions together.鈥濃&苍产蝉辫;

Offered once every three years, the鈥痚xhibition鈥痵eminar gives students hands-on experience in all aspects of exhibition development, including research, writing, design, installation, and public interpretation.鈥&苍产蝉辫;

Student Ownership and Experiential Learning鈥&苍产蝉辫;

贵辞谤鈥Ella Barnett 鈥27, a history and art history double major, the collaborative and long-term nature of the course made it鈥痯articularly impactful.鈥&苍产蝉辫;

 鈥淚 feel like pretty much everything I did in this class was really intensely collaborative,鈥 Barnett said. 鈥淭he products that we produce are a lot more enduring than a typical class.鈥濃&苍产蝉辫;

Students traveled to California to view the collection in the collectors鈥 homes  collection in Jantzen鈥檚 and Beth鈥檚 home and鈥痯articipated鈥痠n behind-the-scenes gallery visits, gaining insight into professional museum practice.鈥&苍产蝉辫;

鈥淚t was a very special experience to be trusted in that way,鈥 said鈥Neva Zamil 鈥27, an art history and sociology major. 鈥淪eeing the works in such personal settings really changed how we thought about the exhibition.鈥濃&苍产蝉辫;

Neva Zamil 鈥27 and fellow students in Professor Michael Mackenzies' Exhibition Seminar worked with alumnus Keith Jantzen '80 and Scott Beth to showcase their photography collection at the 天美传媒 College Museum of Art.

Mackenzie鈥痺as especially pleased that the students in the seminar took ownership of the project,鈥痭oting that鈥痶he exhibition鈥檚 conceptual framework and title鈥痚merged鈥痙irectly from the students.鈥&苍产蝉辫;

鈥淭hey met on their own, developed the conceptual framework, and even came up with the title,鈥 he said. 鈥淭hat combination of 鈥榬hizome鈥 and 鈥榠ntimacy鈥 came entirely from them. As a teacher,鈥痶hat鈥檚鈥痑 dream.鈥濃&苍产蝉辫;

For Jantzen, working closely with students was equally meaningful.鈥&苍产蝉辫;

鈥淭he level of engagement and insight they brought was astonishing,鈥 Jantzen said. 鈥淚t was eye-opening for us to see our collection through their eyes. This kind of hands-on, student-led experience is truly transformative 鈥 for the students and for us as collectors.鈥濃&苍产蝉辫;
