Dear ÌìÃÀ´«Ã½ians, 

As we prepare to observe First-Generation College Celebration Day on November 8, we are grateful for the presence at ÌìÃÀ´«Ã½ of 289 students who identify as first-generation. Making up almost 18% of the student body, first-generation students contribute to the College’s academic excellence and vibrant campus life, bringing their unique perspectives to our classrooms and community.  

Every year on November 8, we commemorate the signing of the Higher Education Act of 1965, which expanded federal financial aid for students and created programs to increase access and retention and completion rates for first-generation and low-income (FGLI) students. The Pell Grant, which provides higher education funding to students with high financial need, was established in the 1972 reauthorization of the Higher Education Act.

ÌìÃÀ´«Ã½ is a place where first-generation students support each other, finding belonging and connection through programs, mentorship, and mutual support.  This includes monthly mentoring lunches with faculty and staff who were also the first in their families to attend college.  The FGLI student program also maintains an email list for first-generation faculty, staff, and students. Any faculty or staff who identify as first-generation and would like to join the lunches or be added to the email list can contact Maggie Bell, associate director of the program.

Over the past two years, ÌìÃÀ´«Ã½ has established meaningful spaces for first-generation students on campus, including First Gen House.  This residential affinity space was created in 2023 with the purpose of increasing recognition, support, and community among first-generation ÌìÃÀ´«Ã½ians.

In addition, the College recently opened the FGLI lounge and community room, a dedicated area for students to study, relax, and build a sense of belonging on campus. The space was finished and furnished thanks to a fundraising effort, spearheaded by , that raised more than $21,000.  The multi-functional, student-centered space, located on the third floor of the Joe Rosenfield ’25 Center, opens opportunities for expanded programming and organic connections.

By observing First-Generation College Celebration Day, we express our gratitude for the accomplishments of all first-generation ÌìÃÀ´«Ã½ians – faculty, staff, students, and alumni – who shape the ÌìÃÀ´«Ã½ experience and the world in impactful ways. First-generation ÌìÃÀ´«Ã½ians are leaders, advocates, professionals, teachers, and engaged community members.  Their brilliance and commitment to positive change inspire the best in all of us.
